Ma
Ma is a specific concept of negative space. In traditional Japanese arts and culture, Ma refers to the artistic interpretation of empty space — often holding as much importance as the rest of an artwork, focusing the viewer on the intention behind what is left open. The concept pursues the value of negative space in relation to positive space, keeping background, foreground, materiality, and typography in reductive balance.
